Lancaster County Solid Waste Management
What are the best environmental choices when considering replacing your existing computer?

Bring it along with you to the Great Green America Fest to receive a $5 festival food voucher for recycling during this exciting event

Look for our big green trailer, where Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority will be collecting computer-related items for recycling. When you drop off your e-recycling, LCSWMA will give you a $5 food voucher, good for use with specified food vendors during GGAF. AERC

E-recycling items accepted on site include desk and laptop computers (includes CPUs, monitors, keyboards, and desktop printers). These items will be recycled through AERC (Advanced Environmental Recycling Center), a Pennsylvania company with its corporate headquarters in Allentown. AERC has a PA Department of Environmental Protection General Permit WMGR081 for processing and beneficial use of electronic equipment and components by sorting, disassembling or mechanical processing.

Reduce – Maintain and keep equipment as long as possible

  • Evaluate, compare and select desktop computers, notebooks and monitors based on their environmental attributes o Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (http://www.epeat.net/) from the Green Electronics Council
  • A typical computer’s lifespan is 2-3 years, but can be extended by 1-2 years with some upgrading.
  • Buy a good monitor; it can last 6-7 years or more. Keep it for use with your next computer.
  • Lease a computer so you can trade it in at the end of the lease.
  • Always use a surge protector power strip will all electronic equipment.

Reuse – A computer of recent vintage can often be refurbished and reused

Recycle – Deliver the computer to a community Electronics Collection Program

About AERC:

CRTs and other electronic equipment can contain high levels of leachable lead and other heavy metals, including mercury and cadmium, as well as phosphorus and PCBs. Millions of dollars are lost each year by not recycling electronic and computer components. 20% of electronic equipment can be reused and 80% can be properly recycled. It takes several thousand years for a monitor to decompose in a landfill.

AERC's superior recycling services assure the following benefits:

  • 100% Recycling and Reuse. No landfill of components.
  • Complete Compliance with all Federal, State and local regulations.
  • Six million dollars of liability insurance. Five million dollar umbrella.
  • Experience: Over 25 years with hazardous waste and 11 years recycling
  • Peace of mind through limited liability.

If current disposal trends continue, the landfill space required for computer carcasses will require one acre of land dug to a depth of 3 1/2 miles (room enough to stack 15 Empire State Buildings end to end).
